Joy of Adoption Story

Endeavor FKA Elias

“Saving Grace is one of my happy places.”

Three years ago, when my beloved pug, Spike, died, I searched for over a year until I saw listings on Saving Grace for a Pug/Boston terrier. My husband, who had been really attached to Spike, wasn’t sure about getting another dog, but he couldn’t resist meeting a pug. Our adoption counselor brought out Elias. He had an all-white head, one blue and one brown eye, and we fell in love.

We were watching the PBS series Endeavor at the time, so decided to change Elias’s name in honor of Inspector Morse. Endeavor is a natural lap dog and loves playing fetch and running around our backyard, either alone, in search of birds, squirrels, snakes, lizards, and groundhogs, or with our neighbor’s dog, Viper, who is another Saving Grace alumnus.

As a retired senior with bad knees, I find it too easy to be sedentary. I know I need to get out of bed in the morning to tend to him and I can no longer spend my entire day in a chair because Endeavor wants to go outside often.
We have had many dogs over the years and all of them were adopted. Adopting instead of buying seems as natural to me as recycling or combining car trips to save gas.

Endeavor is always overjoyed to see us. I sing this song to him every morning: “Endeavor, Endeavor, I’m keeping you forever. You have a velvet muffin head. I love you more than garlic bread. Cause you’re my Boston terrier! Endeavor, Endeavor, I’m keeping you forever. Endeavor is my puppy pie. I’m gonna love him ’til I die. Cause he’s my Boston terrier.”
